World Press Freedom Day is observed on May 3
The World Press Freedom Day is observed on May 3 annually to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993. The theme of World Press Freedom Day 2021 is “Information as a Public Good”
World Asthma Day 2021 is observed on First Tuesday of May (May 4)
The World Asthma Day takes place annually on the First Tuesday of May since 1998. In 2021 World Asthma Day is being observed on May 04, 2021. The day is annually organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to raise asthma awareness, care and support around the world for those people who are affected by asthma. The theme for 2021 World Asthma Day is “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions“.
Coal Miners Day is observed on May 4
In India, the Coal Miners Day is celebrated on May 4 every year, to recognize the hard work of some of the great unsung heroes of Industrial Revolution. The day aims to show appreciation for the coal miners and honour their accomplishments, who spend most of the days digging, tunnelling and extracting coal from the mines. Indian states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra are the significant coal suppliers.
International Day of the Midwife is observed on May 5
Every year the, International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) celebrates the International Day of the Midwife on 5 May. The first International Day of the Midwife was celebrated in 1992. The theme for 2021 International Day of the Midwife is “Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives.”
World Hand Hygiene Day is observed on May 5
Every year, the World Hand Hygiene Day is observed on May 5. The day is organised by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness among people across the globe about the importance of hand hygiene in warding off many serious infections. The theme for 2021 is ‘Seconds Save Lives: Clean Your Hands’.
Madhya Pradesh govt. transferred Rs, 379 crore into accounts of 16,844 beneficiaries under Sambal scheme
In Madhya Pradesh, 379 crore rupees have been transferred into the accounts of 16 thousand 844 beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Jan-Kalyan Sambal scheme. Chief Minister informed that in the difficult times of crisis beneficiaries of Sambal Yojana are also being given three months of free ration along with financial assistance.
Free Swastha Aahar Yojana (Healthy Food Scheme) for the corona patients of Bhopal
Free Swastha Aahar Yojana (Healthy Food Scheme) for the corona patients of Bhopal is launched in state of Madhya Pradesh. Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang said that the patient will get nutritious food on time free of cost in the hospital where he is admitted. Minister Sarang said that as a pilot project, this scheme has been started in 110 hospitals in Bhopal. On its success, this scheme will be started in other cities of the state as well.
Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan flags off 1st supply of UCO based Biodiesel blended Diesel
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan remotely flagged off the first supply of UCO, Used Cooking Oil based Biodiesel blended Diesel from Indian Oil’s Tikrikalan Terminal, Delhi. Centre had initiated Expressions of Interest for “Procurement of Bio-diesel produced from Used Cooking Oil” on the occasion of World Biofuel Day on 10th August 2019.
India, UK adopt Roadmap 2030 to elevate bilateral ties to comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Boris Johnson have adopted an ambitious ‘Roadmap 2030’ to elevate bilateral ties to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’. The Roadmap will pave the way for a deeper and stronger engagement over the next ten years in the areas of people to people contacts, trade and economy, defence and security, climate action and health.
US approves major solar energy project in California desert
The US government has approved a major solar energy project in the California desert that will be capable of powering nearly 90,000 homes. The Interior Department said in a statement, that 550 million dollar Crimson Solar Project will be sited on 2,000 acres of federal land west of Blythe, California. The project will include a battery storage system and will be sited on land designated for renewable energy development by the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan.
RBI imposes Rs 3 crore penalty on ICICI Bank for Violating Specific Directions Issued by RBI
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 3 crore on ICICI Bank Ltd. for non-compliance with certain RBI directions in the matter of shifting of securities from one category to another. As per RBI, penalty has been imposed for “contravention of certain directions issued by the RBI contained in Master Circular on ‘Prudential Norms for Classification, Valuation and Operation of Investment Portfolio by Banks’ dated July 1, 2015” RBI has imposed this penalty in exercise of powers under the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
CCEA gives in-principle approval for strategic disinvestment & transfer of management control of IDBI Bank
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave in-principle approval for strategic disinvestment along with transfer of management control in IDBI Bank Limited. LIC is currently the promoter of IDBI Bank with Management Control and Government of India is the co-promoter. The extent of shareholding to be divested by Government of India and LIC shall be decided at the time of structuring of transaction in consultation with RBI. The Government of India and LIC together own more than 94 per cent of equity of IDBI Bank. The Government of India owns 45.48 per cent and LIC 49.24 per cent.
RBI announces on-tap liquidity window of Rs 50,000 crore to ramp up COVID related health care infrastructure and services in country
RBI proposes for a Term Liquidity Facility of Rs 50,000 crore to ease access to emergency health services. Further, to boost provision of immediate liquidity for ramping up COVID related healthcare infrastructure and services in the country, an on-tap liquidity window of Rs 50,000 crore with tenors of up to three years at the repo rate is being opened till March 31, 2022.
India & Russia to establish a ‘2+2 Ministerial Dialogue’ at Foreign and Defence Level
India and Russia have decided to establish a new 2+2 dialogue at the foreign and defence minister level. Till date, India has this mechanism with only QUAD member countries, which are United States, Japan, and Australia. Russia is the first non-Quad member country with which India will now have this mechanism.
Cabinet approves MoU between India and UK on Migration & Mobility Partnership
The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an MoU on Migration and Mobility Partnership between India and the UK. It is aimed at liberalising issuance of visas promoting mobility of students, researchers and skilled professionals and strengthening cooperation on issues related to irregular migration and human trafficking between the two sides. The MoU will benefit Indian students, academics, and researchers, migrants for professional and economic reasons and those willing to contribute through various projects to the economic development of both countries. It can support the innovation ecosystem in both countries by facilitating free flow of talent.
Cabinet approves MoU between India and UK on Global Innovation Partnership
The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an MoU on Global Innovation Partnership between India and the UK. It will support Indian innovators to scale up their innovations thereby helping them explore new markets and become self sustainable. It will also foster the innovative ecosystem in India. The innovations selected under GIP would accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. GIP will also develop an open and inclusive e-market place (E-BAAZAR) for cross border innovation transfer.
Mahesh Balasubramanian Appointed as MD of Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance
Mahesh Balasubramanian has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company Limited (KLI). He has been appointed for a period of three years.
T Rabi Sankar appointed fourth Deputy Governor of RBI, succeeding BP Kanungo
Tavarna Rabi Sankar, the Executive Director at Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been named as the fourth Deputy Governor of the central bank. Sankar has been appointed for a period of three years. The other three RBI deputy governors at RBI are Michael Patra, Mahesh Kumar Jain, and M. Rajeshwar Rao.
Mamata Banerjee takes oath as Chief Minister of West Bengal for 3rd consecutive term
TMC chief Mamata Banerjee was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive term. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered her oath of office and secrecy at a simple ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata. Ms. Banerjee has become the second woman in the country to be sworn in as Chief Minister of any state consecutively for three terms after former Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dixit.
Lewis Hamilton wins 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain) won the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix, held at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal. This was the second win of the season for Hamilton and 96th career victory.
Shuttlers PV Sindhu & Michelle Li named Athlete Ambassadors for IOC’s ‘Believe in Sports’ campaign
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has nominated Indian shuttler PV Sindhu and Michelle Li of Canada as athlete ambassadors for the ‘Believe in Sport’ campaign, launched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The campaign is aimed at preventing any form of cheating, competition manipulation or match-fixing, which influences the course or the result of a match in order to obtain an advantage for the individual or others. The campaign was launched in 2018 by IOC to raise awareness among athletes, coaches and officials of the threat of competition manipulation.
Mark Selby becomes World Champion for 4th time in Snooker
In Snooker, Mark Selby became the World Champion for the fourth time. Selby won the Championship defeating Shaun Murphy by 18-15 victory at Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. Prior to this, Selby won the Championship title in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2021.

Jose Mourinho has been appointed Italian football club AS Roma coach on a three-year contract from next season onwards. Mourinho has also coached Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea in his illustrious coaching career.
Thisara Perera announces retirement from international cricket
Former Sri Lanka ODI and T20 skipper Thisara Perera announced his retirement from international cricket yesterday. The 32-year-old all-rounder, in his letter addressed to Sri Lanka Cricket, said that he felt “the time is right” for him to step aside and pave the way for younger and more talented players to take over the reins.
‘Shooter Dadi’ Chandro Tomar passed away
Shooter Chandro Tomar, who was nicknamed ‘Shooter Dadi’, has passed away. Tomar, who was believed to be the oldest female sharpshooter in the world, hailed from the village of Johri in the Bagpat district of Uttar Pradesh. Inspired by her feat, the award-winning Biopic of Tomar was launched titled “Saand Ki Aankh (2019)”, starring Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar.
Aeronautical Scientist Manas Bihari Verma, Part of LCA-Tejas Developing Team passed away
Aeronautical scientist Manas Bihari Verma died of heart attack at his native place in Darbhanga district of Bihar last night. He was 78. Mr Verma played a vital role in the development of the Light Combat Aircraft – Tejas. He was close associate of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. In 2018, he was conferred Padma Sri.
Former J&K Governor Jagmohan passed away
Former Union Minister and Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Jagmohan passed away in New Delhi today. He was 94. A civil servant, Jagmohan also served as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Goa. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha once and represented New Delhi in Lok Sabha thrice. In the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cabinet, he served as the Union Minister for Communications, Urban Development, Tourism and Culture. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 1977 and Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
