The job of a bank probationary officer (PO) / IBPS Clerk is considered as a lucrative career option and a white collar job. Every year lacs of aspirants contest for PO/ Clerk exams. The job offers a high career growth and prospects for a bright future in banking. Many candidates want to know about the responsibilities of a bank PO/ IBPS Clerk , what kind of job they do once they are recruited in banks.

The allotment process is a part of the CWE Selection Process. After the allotment by IBPS, now you have to wait for your respective banks to announce your reporting date. The openings can be filled next year. The joining dates for IBPS PO Joining/ IBPS Clerk Joining will be announced after 2-3 months of allotment.

Responsibilities of a Bank P.O.

⇒ Before the completion of the probation period, which is for 2 years, he/she can be asked to perform any kind of bank related activity; it can be the clerk or assistant type of job. This is done to get them acquainted with various working procedures of the bank.

⇒ During the probation period they are trained for having the practical knowledge in finance, accounting, marketing, billing as well as investment. This is done by entrusting them with jobs of various categories, viz. any of the routine works such as scrolling, posting, account preparation etc.

⇒ After successful completion of the probation period, he/she is posted in any bank branch as an Assistant Bank Manager to handle works on daily customer transactions, viz. passing a cheque, draft issuance, cash management etc.

⇒ He/She has to work towards increasing the bank business viz. managing cash flow, loans and mortgages and finances.

⇒ Another responsibility of PO is to work as public relations officer, handle customer complaints and address various customer related issues such as discrepancies in accounts, rectification of undue charges and look into complaints regarding services provided by the bank.

⇒ Once he/she gets acclimatized to the bank environment and gain enough experience on bank’s working procedures, based on their personal skills and aptitude, they can be assigned more responsible work viz. planning, budgeting, marketing, loan processing and approval, investment management etc.

⇒ The work of a bank PO also includes managerial tasks, such as supervision of clerical work, taking decisions for the benefit of the bank, managing cash balance etc.

⇒ PO has to verify all the work done by bank clerk. All the transactions of bank involve the role of makerand checker. For example, in cash transactions, if clerk is the maker, then the PO is the checker; in case of loans, generally he/she is the maker and bank manager is the checker. The responsibility of losses resides with the checker.

⇒ He/she takes care of the loan related documents and performs on site visit of the loan taking parties as and when required.

⇒ A bank PO issues ATM cards, cheque books, Demand Drafts etc.

⇒ It is anticipated that a PO should be aware of all the latest developments of the bank. They are required to read all the circulars and should know about all the decisions taken by the bank management.

Responsibilities of a Bank Clerk

⇒ Handle customers and their financial transactions through bank clerical functions.

⇒ Serve as primary point of contact to bank customers.

⇒ Answer and respond to bank customers’ inquiries on financial transactions.

⇒ Process and accept deposits and loan payments from bank customers.

⇒ Make payments to bank customers after checking and validating customers’ signatures on checks.

⇒ Check the availability of funds before making payments to customers.

⇒ Prepare and record all deposits and payments into the bank’s computer systems.

⇒ Educate customers on bank products and services.

⇒ Assist administrative department in their tasks.

⇒ Perform physical verification of cash at the end of the day and reconcile with banking records.

Documents Required for Joining in Banks

At the time of reporting, you have to keep some documents with you that will be verified by the Bank Officials. To join a bank is not an easy task. The banks are very conscious about the verification of documents as there are some illegal activities involved in the recruitment process to join the bank. Even if you have secured top score in the IBPS Exam and interview, if you fail to bring any of the required document, your allotment will be canceled by the bank.

Therefore, here we are providing you list of all the important documents that should be carried by the candidates in original and also in photocopy, at the time of reporting. Check out the list of important documents.

1. Identity Proof

You must keep at least one ID proof with you at the time of reporting. This may include PAN card/Aadhar card/Driving License/Voter’s ID/Passport etc.

2. Date of Birth Proof

DOB Proof is also the most important document which is verified by officials. Usually, they verify it by referring to mark sheets but you should also carry the DOB certificate with you, as it may be possible that they will check it.

3. Documents related to Educational Qualification

You will be asked for your original documents related to your qualifications. The documents must include mark sheets of 10th and 12th Class, mark sheets and degrees of UG & PG or any other educational details if you have. The date of passing the degree exam mentioned on degree mark sheet or provisional certificate will be considered to check your eligibility condition.

4. Certificates of Computer Literacy

If you have applied for the clerical position, then it is mandatory for you that you should have studied Computer Science or IT as a subject in high school or college. You can also provide the degree of any course in computer operations/language from an institute.

5. Caste Certificate/Category Certificate

Candidates belonging to the reserved category should bring their caste/category certificates issued by appropriate authority.

 Those belonging to OBC category (non-creamy layer) should bring a certificate that specifically contains a clause that the candidate does not belong to creamy layer section. It should have been issued within one year from the date of exam notification (refer date of IBPS advertisement)

 PWD candidates are entitled to bring disability certificate in proper format issued by district medical board.

 Ex-Servicemen must bring discharge letter along with pension payment order & proof of last held rank.

6. IBPS Online Application

You have to bring the online application of IBPS PO/Clerk/SO Exam. You should take the printout of these application forms, as it will be asked at the time of reporting.

7. Relieving Letter

Many candidates mention their experience in the application forms. If you are one of those candidates, then you should also bring the relieving letter with other documents.

All the above-stated documents are very important, as Banks have the authority to disqualify candidates from job joining if they do not provide the necessary proofs.

Be responsible, so that you don’t lose the opportunity by making silly mistakes of not bringing any of these important documents.

 So make sure, when the allotment process start and you are asked to report, start collecting all these documents and keep them with you along with their photocopies at the time of reporting.

How is training conducted?

Training is usually carried out by banks for all candidates. These programs are normally 10-15 days long. They are conducted at the banks’ own training centres, zonal offices, or head offices. Banks may provide hostels or stay facilities during this period. Classes are held for 5-6 hours daily wherein candidates are trained in the bank’s processes and normal banking procedures. It is only after training is complete that a candidate can actually start working in the bank.

For PO: If you are selected as a Probationary Officer (PO), your training will be conducted by the allotted bank in their respective training centre. 

For Clerk: If you are selected as a Clerk, your training will be conducted in the same state by the allotted bank in its training centre or in a regional zonal office.
