Today’s “Phrase of the Day” is “cost someone dearly/dear“ and its meaning is “to make someone suffer a lot (or) to lose something very important (particularly, as a result of a mistake)”.

Example Sentence:

  • Time is running out to act on global heating. Electing Donald Trump the first time cost us dearly; a second term would be catastrophic (disastrous).
  • His two losses in a row in the fifth and sixth rounds cost him dearly.
  • These extended redemption penalties can cost you dearly in the long run.
