FAME India Scheme – An Electric Vehicle Drive

The central and state governments have launched schemes and incentives to promote electric mobility in India, Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME II), is a scheme launched by Government of India to give a boost to development of Electric Vehicles. This scheme is a major step to combat climate change across the globe.

Phase I of this scheme lasted from 2015 to 2019, while Phase II began in 2019 and is planned to be completed in 2022.The Government of India has allocated a budget of Rs 10,000 crores for the second phase of this scheme.

Key Features of FAME India Scheme Phase- II 


  1. Government of India allocates Rs 10,000 crores for a period of 3 years from 2019 to 2022.
  2. Rs 1,000 crores has been set aside for setting up charging stations for electric vehicles.
  3. It has been proposed to set up 1 slow charging unit for every electric bus and 1 fast charging station for 10 electric buses.
  4. The Central Government will incentivize the purchase of approximately 5 lakh three wheelers, 7000 electric buses and 35,000 four wheelers.
  5. Department of Heavy Industries, the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises are the concerned authority for the implementation of this scheme.
  6. Emphasis on electrification of the public transportation that includes shared transport.
  7. Establishment of Charging stations on both sides of the road at an interval of about 25 km each are also proposed on major highways connecting major city clusters.

Go Electric campaign


The Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari launched the Go Electric campaign in the start of 2021 to encourage the adoption of electric mobility vehicles and electric cooking appliances and to ensure energy security in the country.

Go Electric is a future for India that will promote low-cost, environmentally friendly and indigenous electrical products. The country must encourage the use of vehicles that run on alternative fuels such as electric batteries, CNG and biofuels.
