eSanjeevani Scheme – An Online Teleconsultation Service

eSanjeevani is a scheme launched by the government of India works under Union Health & Family Welfare Ministry that provides you a platform for tele-consultations with Doctors. According to the government, this is the first time the government of a country is offering this kind of service to its citizens.

There are two components of teleconsultation services- eSanjeevani and eSanjeevaniOPD.

Difference between eSanjeevani and eSanjeevani OPD

eSanjeevani :- The eSanjeevani is a telemedicine service for doctor-to-doctor interaction which is implemented under Ayushman Bharat health initiative. It aims to connect all the 1.5 lakh health and wellness center which has been established under Ayushman Bharat Abhiyan.

eSanjeevani has been implemented in 23 States. The first state to launch this service was Andhra Pradesh.

eSanjeevaniOPD :- It is the second tele-consultation service that enables patient-to-doctor interaction ensuring the physical distancing between patient and doctors amidst COVID-19 pandemic. The OPD have provided essential healthcare service in a critical time when conventional medicine is perceived to be risky because of the nature of the infectious disease.

The app was launched on 13th April 2020, aftermath COVID-19 outbreak. This has turned to be a boon by containing the spread of Corona virus besides providing essential healthcare for non-COVID patients. Here, doctor to patient teleconsultation is offered free of cost to the patients.

Overview of eSanjeevani Scheme

• The scheme was started in November 2019.
• eSanjeevani also termed as the National Teleconsultation Service, aims to provide healthcare services to patients in their homes.
• Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has been developed the eSanjeevani OPD portal and system in Mohali.
• The panel of doctors on the service is appointed by the state governments.
• The service is also available on mobile application.

Need of Telemedicine Services like eSanjeevani

These type of Telemedicine services are essential in a country like India where the doctor to patient ratio is much lower than the number prescribed by the WHO. In India, there is very scarcity of doctors, here for every 1445 Indians only one doctor is available (but the WHO recommended ratio is 1:1000.

The availability of medical amenities including doctors is highly scarce in rural and remote areas of the country. In such conditions, it is important to have a system that will provide consultation services to people residing in rural and backward or hilly areas. This is where eSanjeevani OPD can be helpful.

Also, during the current pandemic times, it is necessary to have a telecommunication service like this where a patients find a way to have consultations with doctors. This can prevent them from travelling to hospitals and decrease the risk of catching/spreading infections especially in covid-19 pandemic. This has proved beneficial in containing the spread of Covid.

What is required to use eSanjeevani OPD

1. Users must have a laptop or a personal computer with a web camera connected with good Internet connection.
2. A working mobile phone to send/receive OTPs by SMS.
3. An android phone if you are doing teleconsultation using mobile application.
