World Post Day or World Post Office Day is celebrated on 9 October
World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9 as the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. In 1969, the UPU Congress held in Tokyo declared the day as World Post Day. Since then, countries across the world would include in the annual celebrations.
World Mental Health Day (Second Saturday of October) is celebrated on 10 October
October 10 is the second Saturday of 2020 and will be celebrated as the World Mental Health Day. The objective of this day is to spread awareness about mental health issues and taking efforts in supporting those. It also emphasizes on what more needs to be done to make sure that talking mental health does not remain a taboo in society.
Delhi Cabinet approves installation of ₹20-cr ‘smog tower’ in Connaught Place
To curb the menace of air pollution, Delhi government has decided to set-up a ₹20-crore ‘smog tower’ in Connaught Place, announced by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This tower will be in addition to the Central government’s smog tower coming up in Anand Vihar.
Goa becomes first ‘Har Ghar Jal’ state in country
Goa has become the first Har Ghar Jal State in the country by providing tap water connection to every rural household. The state has provided tap water connection to two lakh 30 thousand rural households. North Goa with one lakh 65 thousand rural households and South Goa with 98 thousand rural households in 191 Gram Panchayats are fully saturated with assured piped water supply through tap connections.
LG Manoj Sinha inaugurates Kisan Kendra & Agriculture Mall in Jammu
In Jammu and Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated Bawa Jitto Kisan Kendra and Agriculture Mall at Talab Tillo in Jammu. The LG said that this much awaited infrastructure would serve the farming community by providing them a point to meet and get trained on latest techniques and technologies used in Agriculture. He also informed that all the farmers have been linked with PM KISAN initiative irrespective of their land holdings.
PM Modi set to launch distribution of property cards under SVAMITVA scheme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch this weekend the physical distribution of property cards under the SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) scheme that will enable people in rural India to use their property as a financial asset. Property cards will enable people in rural India to use property as a financial asset. After the launch by the Prime Minister, the state governments will physically distribute the cards to people from more than 750 villages across six states.
India to surpass Japan to become the third largest economy by 2050: Lancet
The Indian economy is set to become the third largest in the world behind China and the US by 2050 and retain the same position in 2100, a study published in the medical journal Lancet found by translating working age population of countries into scenarios for total GDP.

India is estimated to have the largest working-age population by 2100, followed by Nigeria, China and the US, despite a huge decline in the number of workers, according to a study published in Lancet recently. Global population is expected to peak in 2064 at 9·73 billion and then decline to 8·79 billion in 2100.

India Post has commenced celebration of National Postal Week from World Post Day. Communications Ministry said, the purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to social and economic development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tributes to Bhai Taru Singh on his 300th Birth Anniversary. Mr Modi said, Bhai Taru Singh’s name will always be synonymous with courage and fearlessness. Born in 1720 in Amritsar, Bhai Taru Singh was martyred protecting Sikh values.

Armenia, Azerbaijan agree on cease-fire in Nagorno-Karabakh
Russia has co-sponsored peace talks on Nagorno-Karabakh together with the United States and France as co-chairs of the so-called Minsk Group. With Russia’s mediation, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a cease-fire in Nagorno-Karabakh starting Saturday following two weeks of heavy fighting that marked the worst outbreak of hostilities in the separatist region in more than a quarter-century.
India donates 1.8 million N95 masks to Philadelphia city in US
India has donated 1.8 million N95 masks to Philadelphia, the largest city in the US state of Pennsylvania, to help in its fight against COVID-19, setting another example of a robust Indo-US partnership in the health sector. India had also supplied hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malaria drug which is seen as a possible cure for COVID-19, to the US at the request of President Donald Trump.
Japan, Mongolia to cooperate on Free and Open Indo-Pacific
Foreign ministers of Japan and Mongolia have agreed to cooperate in promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. The move is being seen as a step to counter China’s growing assertiveness in the region. The recent meeting of foreign ministers of QUAD nations – India, United States, Australia and Japan held in Tokyo had agreed to seek more countries support for the Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
RTGS facility to be available round the clock from December
RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that the RTGS system of fund transfer will be available round-the-clock from December. Under RTGS, the minimum transfer amount is ₹2 lakh and the facility is available only during working hours of banks.
RBI announces monetary policy; No changes in Interest rate & Reverse Repo rate
The Reserve Bank of India in its bi-monthly Monetary Policy statement issued has maintained a status quo keeping the key interest rates unchanged. The reverse repo rate remains unchanged at 3.35 per cent, the repo rate at four per cent. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das proposed that the RTGS system for real time fund transfer to become 24X7 from December 2020.
BMRCL inks MoUs with corporate companies to develop upcoming metro stations under CSR funds
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited has signed MoUs with the corporate companies to develop upcoming metro stations under their CSR funds. The proposed metro line between Electronic city and Bangalore International airport will now get CSR funds for the development and maintenance of metro stations. Infosys foundation has come forward to pay Rs. 200 crore for the construction of Konappana Agrahara metro station near the Electronic city.
Nobel Peace Prize 2020 awarded to World Food Programme
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2020 has been awarded to the Nobel Peace Prize 2020 awarded to World Food Programme (WFP). The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winner for this year’s peace prize on Friday at 11:00 am (0900 GMT) at the Nobel Institute in Oslo.
Maharashtra govt appoints Jai Jeet Singh as new ATS chief
Maharashtra government has appointed Additional Director General of Police Jai Jeet Singh as chief of the state’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Mr. Singh, currently posted as ADG, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), will now head the ATS. The 1990-batch IPS officer will succeed Deven Bharti who has been transferred as ADG, State Security Corporation.
India successfully test-fires anti-radar missile Rudram 1
India successfully tested Rudram 1, a tactical anti-radiation missile that the Indian Air Force (IAF) can fire from its Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets to take down enemy radars and surveillance systems. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed the new-generation weapon. It was tested at the interim test range Balasore, off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal.
Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan passed away
Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan passed away in New Delhi. He was 74. The Lok Janshakti Party founder and Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had recently undergone a heart operation at a private hospital. He was elected to Lok Sabha eight times and also held the record of winning his constituency, Hajipur, with the highest margin for several years.
