ADB approves $100 million loan to upgrade power distribution system in Bengaluru
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a USD 100 million (around Rs 730 crore) loan to modernise and upgrade the power distribution system in Bengaluru city. Besides the USD 100 million sovereign loans, ADB will provide a USD 90 million loan without sovereign guarantee for the project to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (BESCOM), one of the five state-owned distribution utilities in Karnataka.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates migrant worker cell in Surat
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated a migrant worker cell of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) at Udhna based iLab in Surat. He said that this cell will do a detailed mapping of migrant workers and classify them according to their skill. This will help in connecting ‘Shramshakti’ to relevant industries and boost their livelihood and also ensure their dignity.
Madhya Pradesh rolls out ‘Launch Pad Scheme’ to make youth self-reliant
‘Launch Pad Scheme’ is being started in Madhya Pradesh for boys and girls coming out of child care institutions and having completed 18 years of age. The objective of this scheme of the Women and Child Development Department is to provide such a platform to these youth, through which they will be able to become self-reliant by continuing their education and training.
J&K admin signs MoU with NBCC to set up IT towers in both Capital cities
Jammu and Kashmir IT Infrastructure Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NBCC for establishing IT Towers in both the Capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar.
Chennai tops the world in CCTV surveillance
Chennai tops the world in CCTV surveillance. Chennai has the maximum CCTV coverage per square kilometre and per 1,000 population among the 130 cities studied worldwide, according to a recent report published in South Asia Journal. According to the report, the world’s first CCTV camera was installed in Germany in 1942, and now there are nearly one billion devices. China and India are the countries with the highest densities of CCTV surveillance cameras in urban areas. Chennai, India, has 657 cameras per sq km.

India launches 40th Scientific Expedition to Antarctica
India launched the 40th Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. This Indian expedition marks four decades of the country’s scientific endeavour to the southern white continent. The 40th expedition journey will be flagged off from Goa tomorrow with 43 members onboard. The chartered ice-class vessel MV Vasiliy Golovnin will make this journey and will reach Antarctica in 30 days.

PM Modi inaugurates National Metrology Conclave 2021
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has addressed the National Metrology Conclave, via video conferencing. National Metrology Conclave 2021 was organised by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Physical Laboratory (CSIR-NPL), New Delhi, to mark its 75th year of inception. This year theme: ‘Metrology for the Inclusive Growth of the Nation’.

PM Modi to dedicate to nation New Rewari – New Madar Section of Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation the 306 Kilometer New Rewari – New Madar Section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. He will also flag off the world’s first Double Stack Long Haul 1.5 Kilometer long Container Train hauled by electric traction from New Ateli -New Kishangarh during the event.

Toycathon 2021 launched to promote manufacturing of indigenous toys
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Union Minister for Textiles and Women & Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani jointly launched the Toycathon 2021. This Toycathon is aimed to conceptualize innovative toys based on the Indian value system which will inculcate the positive behaviour and good value among the children.

PM CARES Fund Trust allocates Rs.201.58 crores for installation of PSA Medical Oxygen Generation Plants
The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations, PM CARES Fund Trust is allocating Rs. 201.58 crore for installation of additional 162 dedicated Pressure Swing Adsorption, PSA Medical Oxygen Generation Plants inside public health facilities in the country. The plants have a warranty for first 3 years. For the next 7 years, the project includes Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract..

“Udyog Manthan” being organized from Jan 4 to March 2
Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is organizing Udyog Manthan – a marathon of focused sector-specific webinars for promoting Quality and Productivity in Indian Industry. It got underway yesterday and will go on till 2nd of March. The webinar series comprising 45 sessions will cover various major sectors in manufacturing and services. Each webinar will be a two-hour session involving discussions led by sectoral and industry experts in a particular sector.

Bangladesh approves Oxford University-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine
The government of Bangladesh has granted approval for the emergency use of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine. The approval to import the vaccine was granted by the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) of Bangladesh late on Monday to Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (BPL). The BPL has signed an agreement with the Serum Institute of India (SII) for importing 30 million shots of the vaccine for Bangladesh.

U.S. Congress passes ‘Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act’
The U.S. Congress has passed the ‘Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act’ to increase the number of scholarships for Pakistani women in higher education under merit and needs-based programme. The bill was passed by the United States Senate by a voice vote on January 1. The bill now heads to the White House for U.S. President Donald Trump to sign into law.

Nancy Pelosi was narrowly re-elected speaker of the US House of Representatives on Sunday, as a new Congress took office amid political uncertainty, with Senate control undecided and a Republican fight looming over presidential election results.

IDBI Bank announced the launch of video KYC account opening (VAO) facility for savings bank accounts. Through the facility, a customer can open a savings account with the lender from the convenience of his/her home or office as there are no physical forms to be filled or visits to be made to the branch.

Bank of Baroda launches WhatsApp banking
Bank of Baroda announced the launch of banking services on WhatsApp. The services offered by the bank via WhatsApp will be balance inquiry, mini statement, cheque status enquiry, cheque book request, blocking of debit card, information on Bank’s product and services, register/apply for digital products etc.

Indian multinational two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturing company, Bajaj Auto has become the most valuable two-wheeler company in the world, after it crossed a market capitalization of more than Rs. 1 lakh crore, on January 01, 2021.

Argentine filmmaker Pablo Cesar to head 51st IFFI’s International Jury
The International Jury for 51st edition of International Film Festival of India has been announced with eminent filmmakers from across the world. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry in a statement said that the Jury will comprise Pablo Cesar of Argentina as Chairman, Prasanna Vithanage of Sri Lanka, Abu Bakr Shawky of Austria, Priyadarshan of India and Rubaiyat Hossain of Bangladesh. Pablo Cesar is an Argentine filmmaker. He has contributed to the African cinema by making the critically acclaimed films, Equinox, the Garden of the Roses, Los dioses de agua and Aphrodite, the Garden of the Perfumes.

Alexander Ellis appointed as new British High Commissioner to India
Alexander Ellis has been appointed as the new British High Commissioner to India in succession to Sir Philip Barton. Mr. Ellis has earlier served in Lisbon and Brazil as well.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi sworn in as Andhra Pradesh HC judge
Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a Judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court. Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice JK Maheswari administered the oath of office to Justice Bagchi.

Justice Pankaj Mithal takes oath as Chief Justice of J&K, Ladakh Court
Justice Pankaj Mithal has been appointed as the new Chief Justice (CJ) of the Common High Court for the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh in Jammu.

Justice Vineet Kothari takes oath as Gujarat HC Judge
Justice Vineet Kothari took oath as a Judge in Gujarat High Court. He was previously an Acting Chief Justice in Madras High Court. He was transferred to Gujarat High Court on recommendation of a five Judge collegium led by the Chief Justice of India. He was elevated as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court in 2005 and was transferred to Karnataka in 2016.

Sanjay Kapoor elected as All India Chess Federation president
Sanjay Kapoor was elected president of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) while Bharat Singh Chauhan retained the secretary’s post. Kapoor, representing Uttar Pradesh Chess Association, defeated incumbent PR Venketrama Raja in a close contest. Kapoor received 33 votes as against 31 of Raja. Chauhan beat Ravindra Dongre 35-29. Apart from the president, secretary and treasurer, six vice-presidents and six joint secretaries were also elected.

Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council elects Ashish Pethe as New Chairman
The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), the national apex body of the gems and jewellery industry, has announced the appointment of Ashish Pethe as chairman and Saiyam Mehra as vice chairman for a period of two years. Pethe has been closely associated with GJC and was the Zonal Chairman West, which he will continue even after this new position.

Kiren Rijiju launched the Assam Rifles Public School in Shillong as a Khelo India Sports School
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju launched the Assam Rifles Public School in Shillong as a Khelo India Sports School. At present, nine Sports Schools have been approved across the country, out of which five are managed by Defence and Paramilitary forces. In the North-East Region, Assam Rifles Public School is the first Sports School announced under Khelo India scheme.

Indian Army inks pact with Goa Shipyard to get 12 fast patrol boats
Indian Army has inked a contract with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to procure 12 Fast Patrol Boats for surveillance and patrolling of large water bodies, including those in high altitude areas like Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh. Pangong Tso’s 134-km length is divided into eight ‘fingers’, military parlance for mountain spurs jutting into the water body that is contested by both sides. The lake is frozen with the onset of winters, and the Army plans to deploy around two dozen such boats by next summer.

Former Maharashtra Minister Vilas Patil Undalkar passes away
Former Maharashtra cabinet minister and seven-time Congress MLA Vilas Patil Undalkar has passed away. The veteran Congressman, Undalkar, who was popularly known as ‘kaka’, was elected seven times from Karad-South Assembly constituency for a record 35 consecutive years, from 1980 to 2014. Undalkar held the Cooperation and Law and Justice portfolios in the State Cabinets during the previous Congress-led state governments.
