International Poverty Eradication Day is observed October 17
October 17 is marked as the International Poverty Eradication Day. According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, one of the keys to ending child poverty is addressing poverty in the household, from which it often stems. Access to quality social services must be a priority.
ITBP launches cycling expedition from its Pegong base in Sikkim
The Eleventh Battalion Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) launched a cycling expedition from its Pegong base in Sikkim to border villages of the state. The Minister of Culture, Road and Bridges Department of Sikkim Samdup Lepcha flagged off the expedition. Total 218 Kilometers will be covered by the ITBP team in the course of 20 days in difficult terrains.
Star-studded Ramleela begins at Laxman Qila in Ayodhya
The star-studded Ramleela started at Laxman Qila in Ayodhya. Doordarshan is broadcasting it live. The live telecast, being done for the first time, will be available from 7 pm every day through the nine-day Navratri period leading up to Dussehra on October 25. State Culture Minister, Neelkanth Tiwari inaugurated the 9-day long event by lighting lamps. Delhi MP, Pravesh Verma was also present on the first day of Ramlila.
UP government launches ‘Mission Shakti’ campaign to tackle crime against women
Uttar Pradesh government has launched a 6-month long women empowerment campaign ‘Mission Shakti’ to raise awareness and tackle crime against women in the state. The campaign was kicked off by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Devi Paatan Shakti Peeth (देवीपाटन शक्ति पीठ) in Balrampur. Mr Yogi said that the government is committed to the security of women. The campaign was initiated by various ministers, public representatives and senior officials in all 75 districts across the state.
Govt. amends J&K’s Panchayati Raj Law 1989
The Union Government has amended Jammu & Kashmir’s Panchayati Raj Law 1989, providing for setting up of District Development Councils, delimitation of their constituencies and their elections. Every district will be divided into 14 territorial constituencies to elect members of the Council. The Council will consist of directly elected members from territorial constituencies in the district, MLAs representing a part or whole of the district whose constituencies lie within the district and the Chairperson of all Block Development Councils of the district.
India, Chile hold first joint commission meeting
India and Chile held their first joint commission meeting and agreed to add new momentum to their relations in a wide range of fields including trade and commerce, agriculture, health and social security, defence and space. Chile will also be opening its Consulate General in Mumbai.
India hosts virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
India hosted the virtual Summit of Ministers of Justice of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, SCO. The Ministers of Justice from SCO Member States, Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad highlighted the initiatives taken by the Indian Government for providing affordable and easy access to justice for all. He mentioned about Pro Bono Legal Services to provide free legal aid to marginalized sections of the society.
Supersonic Cruise Missile, BrahMos successfully test fired
BRAHMOS, the supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired from Indian Navy’s indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai, hitting a target in the Arabian Sea. The missile hit the target successfully with pin-point accuracy after performing high-level and extremely complex manoeuvres.
Mar Thoma Church Head Joseph Mar Thoma passed away
Joseph Mar Thoma, 21st Mar Thoma Metropolitan and current primate of the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church passed away. He was 89.
