Vijay Diwas is observed on December 16
On 16th December 1972, the Pakistani forces surrendered to the allied forces consisting of the Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan. Hence this special day is a remembrance day for the brave soldiers and for all those people who had fought and lost their lives in successfully achieving this noble cause.

NATIONAL AFFAIRS

GoI & NDB ink loan agreement for 1,000 million dollar to provide support to Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan
Government of India and New Development Bank today signed a loan agreement for one thousand million dollar to provide support to Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan through MGNREG Scheme. Finance Ministry said, the programme will support Government in mitigating the adverse economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic and enable economic recovery in the rural areas through natural resource management, NRM works.

Cabinet accords approval for National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector
Considering the need to ensure India’s national security, the Cabinet accorded approval for the National Security Directive on Telecommunication Sector. Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, under the provisions of the Directive, in order to maintain the integrity of the supply chain security, Government will declare a list of Trusted Sources / Trusted Products for the benefit of the Telecom Service providers. Telecom Service Providers are required to connect new devices which are designated Trusted Products.

Ashok Leyland introduces two passenger bus Falcon Super and Gazl in Saudi Arabia
Hinduja Group flagship firm Ashok Leyland on introduced two passenger bus models – the 70-seater Falcon Super and 26-seater Gazl – in Saudi Arabia. Manufactured at Ashok Leyland’s Ras Al Khaimah facility in the UAE, 70-seater Falcon Super buses will be predominantly marketed to corporate entities and 26-seater Gazl will be more focused on the hospitality and tourism sector.

High Commission of India launches essay competition in Bangladesh
The High Commission of India in Bangladesh launched a writing competition on the topic ‘What Liberation Means to Me?’ for Bangladeshi youth between 18-35 years of age on the eve of the Victory Day celebrations marking liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. The writing competition has been organised in association with ‘Youth Opportunities’ which works among the young people as a youth development platform. The submission deadline for the competition is 10th January. The winner of the essay competition will be awarded a laptop as a prize. Top 10 will get a smartphone, crest, book and certificate.

Kazakhstan celebrates its 29th anniversary as sovereign independent nation
On 16th December Kazakhstan is celebrating its 29th anniversary as a sovereign independent nation. Relations between India and Kazakhstan are ancient and historical going back to more than 2000 years. Both the countries actively cooperate under the aegis of Multilateral Fora including CICA, SCO and the UN organizations.

ICICI Direct launches zero brokerage plan
ICICI Securities (I-Sec), one of India’s largest brokerage house with approx. 5 million customers, has launched ‘ICICIdirect Neo’ – a zero brokerage plan. This plan is targeted at traders, offering unlimited trading with zero brokerage on all Futures trades and flat ₹20 per order for Margin and Options trades. ICICIdirect Neo will provide instant liquidity, where customers get cash within 30 minutes of selling stocks as per their chosen plan.

WhatsApp Payments is live with SBI, HDFC, Axis Bank
WhatsApp’s Payments feature is now available to users in India (currently up to 20 million users) with support from State Bank of India, HDFC, ICICI and Axis Bank. WhatsApp designed its payments feature on National Payments Corporation of India’s (NPCI) Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system and was granted approvals to go live in November 2020. Digital payments in India are expected to reach $94 trillion by FY25 and WhatsApp Payments aims to cater to that demand.

India drops two spots to rank 131 of 189 in Human development index
India ranks 131 of 189 countries on the Human Development Index (HDI), slipping two places from last year, the Human Development Report (HDR) 2020 released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Norway topped the index, followed by Ireland and Switzerland. Hong Kong and Iceland complete the top five on the HDI.
