Army Day in India is celebrated on 15 January
The Army Day in India is celebrated on 15 January every year, to salute the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and its citizens. 2021 marks the 73rd Indian Army Day. The day is marked to commemorate the day when General (later Field Marshal) KM Carriappa took over the command of Army from General Sir FRR Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief in 1949 and became the first Commander-in-Chief of Indian Army post Independence.

J&K govt begins hi-tech, 24X7 Call Centre for pilgrims of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine
Jammu and Kashmir government has started a hi-tech, round the clock Call Centre for pilgrims of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. It was inaugurated by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in Katra yesterday. It will prove a major leap towards creating a robust response mechanism to address the queries and grievances of the devotees.

Tamil Nadu celebrates Thiruvalluvar Day
Tamil Nadu celebrates Thiruvalluvar Day in honour of the Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar. Valluvar’s epic work, Thirukkural, which consists of 1330 kurals or couplets is translated into many international and Indian languages. Russian Writer Leo Tolstoy was greatly inspired by Thirukkural and so was Mahatma Gandhi. Thiruvalluvar day is celebrated on the 2nd day of the Thai month.

Telangana celebrates festival of cattle ‘Kanuma’
Kanuma, the festival of cattle is celebrated in Telangana. On the occasion, the people especially in rural areas, worship cattle and agriculture tools. Rural craftsmen and artisans who help farmers in their daily chores are specially honoured.

Harvest festival of Pongal is celebrated in Tamil Nadu
The harvest festival of Pongal is being celebrated across Tamil Nadu with great enthusiasm. India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperation in the field of Information and Communications Technologies. The Department of Telecom and Japan’s Ministry of Communications will enhance mutual cooperation in the field of 5G technologies, telecom security, submarine optical fiber cable system to islands of India, spectrum management, smart cities, high altitude platform for broadband in unconnected areas, disaster management and public safety etc.

Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for the construction of an elevated corridor at Rani Chennamma Circle in Hubballi today in a virtual mode.

2-day ‘Prarambh’, Start-up India International Summit begins in New Delhi
The two-day ‘Prarambh’, Start-up India International Summit began in New Delhi. Members of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries participated in the inaugural event. The summit is being organized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

US President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled a 1.9 trillion dollar Coronavirus emergency relief package. The stimulus plan underscores Biden’s intent to aggressively shore up a deteriorating economy and address the devastation wrought by the pandemic. It is designed to provide another infusion of federal aid for families, businesses and local governments confronting a surge of Covid cases.

Sadyr Japarov wins Kyrgyzstan’s Presidential Election
Sadyr Japarov, has won the Kyrgyzstan’s Presidential election by a landslide victory. He would assume the charge of the office from 28 January 2021. Capital of Kyrgyzstan is Bishkek and Currency is Kyrgyzstani som.

Nepal approves emergency use of Covishield vaccine manufactured in India
Nepal approved the use of AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine manufactured in India against the novel coronavirus. Nepal has reported 266,816 cases and 1,948 deaths from Covid-19 so far.

Kite festival Shakrain celebrated in Dhaka with the slogan ‘Let’s Fly a kite, Cherish Tradition’.
The traditional festival of Shakrain was celebrated in several parts of Dhaka. The kite flying competition is followed by a winter cake festival — pithapuli in which rice cake pudding is eaten by people. The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) organised the festival for the first time this year with the slogan ‘Let’s Fly a kite, Cherish Tradition’.

Elon Musk-owned Tesla Inc. sets up first India entity in Bengaluru
Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle (EV) company Tesla has registered a fully-owned subsidiary in Bengaluru. The company will be called ‘Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited’. This is the first centre of the American giant Tesla in India. Tesla, the most valuable auto company in the world, plans to open such centres in 5 states of India. Tesla headquarter is in California, United States

Fitch Ratings Projects GDP of India at -9.4% in FY21 & 11% in FY22
The Fitch Ratings expect gross domestic product (GDP) of India to contract by 9.4 percent in FY21 (April 2020 to March 2021). Fitch further projects the GDP to expand by 11 percent in FY22 (April 2021 to March 2022).

Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda will virtually receive SKOCH Challenger Award conferred to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for e-Governance. The award has been given to the Ministry for its IT-led initiatives and other transformational initiatives leading to outcome-based performance improvement.

Indian Army inks $20 mn contract with ideaForge to buy SWITCH drones
The Indian Army has recently signed a contract with Mumbai-based drone manufacturing company, ideaForge, to procure high-altitude variant of SWITCH unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The total cost of the deal is approximately USD 20 million. However the quantity of UAVs to be procured is not disclosed. SWITCH are fixed-wing UAV, capable of vertical takeoff and landing. They can be deployed at high altitude and harsh environments for day-and-night surveillance. These UAVs will be delivered to the Indian Army over a period of one year.

Former Congress MP B. S. Gnanadesikan passed away
Former Member of Parliament B. S. Gnanadesikan passed away in Chennai. He was 71. He served as Rajya Sabha Member from the Congress Party twice from 2001 to 2013.
