Ambedkar Jayanti is observed on April 14
Ambedkar Jayanti ( also known as Bhim Jayanti) is an annual festival observed on 14 April to commemorate the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar who was born on 14 April 1891. The Day has been observed as an official public holiday throughout India since 2015. In 2021, we are marking the 130th birth anniversary of Babasaheb. Dr. Ambedkar is known as the Father (chief architect) of the Indian Constitution. He was the first Law and Justice Minister of the country after the independence. Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar has been bestowed with the country’s highest civilian honor, Bharat Ratna in 1990 posthumously.

World Chagas Disease Day is observed on April 14
The World Chagas Disease Day is observed on 14 April to raise the public awareness and visibility among people about Chagas Disease (also called American trypanosomiasis) and the resources needed for the prevention, control or elimination of the disease.

World Art Day is observed on April 15
World Art Day is observed every year on 15 April to celebrate fine arts and promote awareness of creative activity around the world. The day was declared by the International Association of Art (IAA), an NGO working in official partnership with UNESCO. The date has been selected in honor of the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, the famous painter of Mona Lisa. The first celebration of World Art Day was held on April 15, 2012.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched the EatSmart Cities Challenge and Transport 4 All Challenge through video conferencing. EatSmart Cities Challenge is an opportunity for India to play a pioneering role in developing the concept of integrating food systems into city planning and development.

Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan launches Aahaar Kranti mission to spread awareness about nutrition
Government has launched Aahaar Kranti, a mission dedicated to spread awareness about nutrition. It is designed to address the peculiar problem of hunger and diseases in abundance, being faced by India and the world. Studies show that India produces as much as two times the amount of calories it consumes. However, many in the country are still malnourished. The root cause of this strange phenomenon is a lack of nutritional awareness. Keeping this in mind, Aahaar Kranti has been launched with the motto of Uttam Aahaar- Uttam Vichaar or Good Diet-Good Cognition.

Atal Innovation Mission and NITI Aayog signed an agreement with Dassault Systemes Foundation to jointly work towards providing a digitally rich ecosystem of Innovation among aspiring young minds across the country. The Atal Tinkering Labs has played a pivotal role in fostering creativity and imagination amongst school children.

Secretary MeitY inaugurates three new initiatives of NIXI
Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Ajay Prakash Sawhney inaugurated three path breaking initiatives for National Internet Exchange of India, NIXI. These initiatives are IP Guru, NIXI Academy and NIXI-IP-INDEX. The IP Guru is a group to extend support to all the Indian entities who are finding it technically challenging to migrate and adopt Internet Protocol version, IPv6. In addition to this the group will help in identifying and hiring agency that will help end customer by providing necessary technical support to adopt IPv6.

Government Launches Community Mental-Health Digital platform ‘MANAS’
The Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Prof. K Vijay Raghavan launched a mobile app called “MANAS” to cater mental well-being of citizens on scalable, secure and digital platforms. MANAS stands for Mental Health and Normalcy Augmentation System. The app MANAS is developed under the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC), to promote wellbeing across age groups.

Australia to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by Sep 2021
Australia has announced that it will withdraw all remaining troops from Afghanistan by September this year. The decision was announced by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Australia currently has around 80 personnel deployed in Afghanistan. The new announcement marks the end of Australia’s troops’ involvement in the Afghan conflict, which began when US forces launched their military offensive in response to the 11th September 2001, terror attacks. More than 39,000 Australians were deployed and 41 of them were killed during the decades-long conflict.

Bangladesh receives over USD 1 billion financing for vaccination and COVID-19 pandemic response- World Bank
Bangladesh received over USD 1 billion financing from the World Bank to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and to build resilience to the future crisis including vaccination against the COVID-19.It received USD 500 million under the COVID-19 emergency Response and pandemic preparedness project to vaccinate over 54 million people against the virus. The funding will help the government to procure vaccines, expand storage facilities and distribute the vaccines. It will also support and strengthen the national health systems to detect, prevent and treat COVID 19 cases and preparedness for future emergencies, said a press release of the World Bank.

NCAER appoints Poonam Gupta as new Director General
World bank economist Poonam Gupta has been appointed as the new Director General of the policy think tank “National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER)”. Gupta is the first woman director general of NCAER. She would succeed Shekhar Shah who was appointed in 2011 and will complete his second five year term in early May 2021.

OBITUARY

Hockey player Balbir Singh Junior passes away
Hockey player Balbir Singh Junior, who was a member of the Indian hockey team which won silver medal in 1958 Tokyo Asian Games, has passed away. He was 88. Balbir Singh Junior was also known as the “nursery of hockey players in India”. Singh started playing hockey when he was six years old and was first selected to play for the Indian hockey team in 1951. Singh joined the Indian Army in 1962 as an emergency commissioned officer, and retired as a Major in 1984.
