West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Inaugurates 26th Kolkata International Film Festival
West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee has inaugurated the 26th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). The inaugural ceremony was also virtually attended by Bollywood superstar and West Bengal’s brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan from Mumbai. Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s classic ‘Apur Sansar’ will be the inaugural film of the festival in which 131 movies from 45 countries will be screened till January 13.

Maharashtra CM launches Mumbai Coastal Road Tunnel Boring Work
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched Mumbai Coastal Road Tunnel Boring Work in Mumbai while operating the giant tunnel boring machine ‘Mawla’. This machine will go on boring two longest tunnels in Mumbai. The tunnels will connect princess street and Priyadarshini Park in Mumbai. The 12.1 metre wide tunnels are considered to be the widest tunnels in the country. The two tunnels in this project are expected to be completed by June 2022.

Preeti Pant’s Panel to study adverse findings of National Family Health Survey-5
The Health and Family Welfare Ministry has recently formed a technical expert group to study the adverse findings from the National Family Health Survey-5. The Ministry has set up the technical committee of medicine and nutrition experts under the leadership of Joint Secretary Preeti Pant.

Indian Railways First goods train run with an all-female staff crew
In a major breakthrough, Indian Railways’ Western Railway zone has an all-female crew piloted goods train from Vasai Road to Vadodara on 5 January. The goods train that departed from Vasai Road to Vadodara on 5 January, 2021 was helmed by loco pilot – Kumkum Suraj Dongre, Assistant Loco Pilot – Udita Verma and Goods Guard -Akansha Rai.

Bangladesh to be country of focus at 51st International Film Festival of India
Bangladesh will be the country of focus at the 51st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) starting at Goa on January 16. Four films from Bangladesh have been included in this section to recognise the cinematic excellence and contribution of the country. The country of focus section will include Jibandhuli directed by Tanvir Mokammel, Meghmallar directed by Zahidur Rahman Anjan, Under Construction by Rubaiyat Hossain and Sincerely Yours, Dhaka by Nuhash Humanyun, Syed Ahmed Shawki and 9 other individual directors. Jibondhuli tells the story of a drummer and his family during the Liberation War of Bangladesh against Pakistan in 1971.

Prakash Javadekar releases MEE of 146 National Park and Wildlife Sanctuaries
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Prakash Javadekar today released Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of 146 National Park and Wildlife Sanctuaries in the country. At present, India has a network of 903 Protected Areas in the country covering about five per cent of the total geographic area of the country. In order to assess the efficacy of Protected Areas, evaluation of management effectiveness is required.

ISRO to adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Labs across country to promote education
Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO will adopt one hundred Atal Tinkering Labs across the country to promote education in the field of Space Education and Space Technology related innovations for school students. Addressing the virtual event through a special message, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar said, he is extremely elated that different Departments and Ministries of the Government are working in synergy to create an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Nitin Gadkari to launch “Khadi Prakritik Paint” developed by KVIC
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will be launching an innovative new paint developed by Khadi and Village Industries Commission. The eco-friendly, non-toxic paint, called “Khadi Prakritik Paint” is a first-of-its-kind product, with anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties.

PM urges youth to be part of Startup India International Summit ‘Prarambh’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges youth to be part of ‘Prarambh’, the Startup India International Summit, which is being held on the 15th and 16th of this month. This Summit seeks to bring together the top minds from industry, academia, investment, banking, finance and young start up leaders. Nation would also be marking 5 years since the Start-Up India initiative began. This initiative has propelled India to be among the most attractive start-up eco-systems globally.

BANKING & FINANCE

Interest rate on RBI bonds retained at 7.15% for Jan-March 2021
The Government of India Savings Bonds (popularly known as the RBI bonds) have maintained their advantage over bank fixed deposits, with the government retaining 7.15% rate for Jan-March 2021. Most FD rates in large banks are in the 4-6% range. These bonds have a tenor of 7 years and the interest earned is fully taxable. The RBI Bonds do not have a fixed interest rate. The interest rate is reset every 6 months. It is linked to the prevailing rate on National Savings Certificates (NSCs), with the Savings Bonds paying out 0.35% more than the NSC rate.

Kotak Mutual Fund launches Kotak NASDAQ 100 Fund of Fund
Kotak Mutual Fund today announced the launch of Kotak NASDAQ 100 Fund of Fund. The new fund offer opens for subscription from 11 January 2021 to 25 January 2021. Kotak Nasdaq 100 Fund of Fund will invest in units of overseas ETFs. NASDAQ-100 is one of the world’s major large-cap growth indexes.

Axis Bank announces no penalty on premature closure of fixed deposits
Private lender Axis Bank announced the removal of penalty on premature closure of all new retail term deposits booked on or after 15 December 2020 for a tenure of 2 years or more. Axis Bank said the objective of this customer-friendly feature is to inculcate and encourage retail customers to go for long-term savings. Axis Bank gives an interest rate ranging from 2.5% to 5.50% on deposits maturing in 7 days to 10 years.

Indian Navy to coordinate second edition of largest coastal defence exercise Sea Vigil-21
Indian Navy will coordinate the second edition of the largest coastal defence exercise Sea Vigil-21. The exercise will also include Exclusive Economic Zone of the country and will involve all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with other maritime stakeholders. It will also include the fishing and coastal communities. The entire coastal security set up was reorganised after the 26/11 Terror attack at Mumbai which was launched via the sea route. The exercise is a build up towards the major Theatre-level exercise TROPEX [Theatre-level Readiness Operational Exercise] which Indian Navy conducts every two years.
