World Hindi Day is being observed on January 10
World Hindi Day is being observed every year on January 10. The day is commemorated every year with the objective to promote use of Hindi language abroad. On this day in 2006, the First World Hindi Conference was held in Nagpur with the aim to promote the language worldwide and since then, every year 10th January is being observed as the World Hindi Day.
Tamil Nadu govt announces free 2GB data per day to nearly 10 lakh students
In order to enable students to attend online classes, Tamil Nadu government announced data scheme for nearly 10 lakh students in school and even colleges as well as scholarship-funded private colleges for a period of four months. To enable students to attend online classes, state govt announces free 2GB data per day to 9,69,047 students enrolled in govt and government-aided arts and science colleges, polytechnic, engineering colleges and scholarship-funded private colleges from January-April, 2021.
Free bus service for women and elderly in Assam
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off 25 pink buses for free service to women and senior citizens under the ‘Bhraman Sarathi’ scheme in Guwahati. This free transport service introduced for the first time in Guwahati would immensely help the women and senior citizens. I urged all commuters to take adequate care of these buses
Smriti Irani inaugurated Surat International Textile Expo -SITEX at Surat
Union Minister for textile and women and child development Smriti Irani inaugurated Surat International Textile Expo -SITEX at Surat, the Gujarat’s first physical exhibition after Covid19. She said that Gujarat was always ready to share knowledge on the textile industry with West Bengal. The three-day exhibition aimed to promote the brand ‘Surat’ by highlighting the strength of the textile sector. The exhibition is spread over 10500 square metre area where about 100 exhibitors from different parts of the country have kept their stalls.
“Period Room” set up for women at a public toilet in Maharashtra
In a bid to help the women, residing in congested slums, during their menstruation days, a ‘period room’ has been set up at a public toilet in Maharashtra’s Thane city. Equipped with several basic facilities, the period room aims to facilitate menstrual hygiene among women dwelling in slums. The much-needed facility has been set up by the Thane Municipal Corporation in collaboration with an NGO, at a slum in Shanti Nagar locality of Wagle Estate area in Thane.
Cherry Blossom Mao Festival held in Manipur
In Manipur, the Cherry Blossom Mao Festival was held at Senapati district marking the beginning of pink season in the district. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh graced the function virtually due to the pandemic. The Mao area of Senapati district in Manipur is known for Cherry Blossom, a plant which is popularly known as Sakura in Japan. The Manipur government started organizing the festival every year from 2017 onward. However this year, the authority decided to scale down the festival due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Government clarifies on KYC norms for jewellery purchase
The Department of Revenue (DoR), Ministry of Finance has clarified that any purchase of gold, silver, jewellery, or precious gems and stones below ₹2 lakh does not require PAN or Aadhaar of a customer as mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) document. Sources said that the notification issued under PML Act, 2002, on December 28, 2020, is a requirement of FATF Dealers in Precious Metals and Precious Stones (DPMS) to carry out KYC and Customer Due Diligence only when they conduct cash transactions above ₹10 lakh.
India becomes second largest manufacturer of PPE kits and suits
Union Minister for textile and women and child development Smriti Irani has said that India has become the second largest manufacturer of PPE kits and suits in the world in record three months’ time during the coronavirus induced lockdown in March 2020.
Indian Railways achieves a train speed of 130 kilometer per hour on Golden Quadrilateral – Golden Diagonal route
Indian Railways has started the New Year by achieving a landmark to enhance the maximum speed to 130 kilometres per hour for 1,280 km length out of 1,612 Km in Golden Quadrilateral – Golden Diagonal route. This covers the entire GQ-GD route over South Central Railway, except Vijayawada – Duvvada section, where signaling upgradation work is in progress.
Indian economy heading towards V-shaped recovery in 2021: Assocham
India’s economy is showing decisive signs of a ‘V-shaped’ recovery in 2021 with the return of consumer confidence, robust financial markets, an uptick in manufacturing and exporters braving it out in the global market with never-say-die spirit, Assocham said. The industry chamber said it expects immense accruals of economic benefits from the COVID-19 vaccination programme about to be rolled out.
Airtel appoints Pradipt Kapoor as chief information officer
Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel Ltd has appointed Pradipt Kapoor as chief information officer (CIO). Kapoor will succeed Harmeen Mehta who drove Airtel’s collaboration with Amazon Web Services, among others, under its enterprise segment.
National Youth Festival to be organized from January 12
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organizing a week long National Youth Festival in the country commencing from the 12th of this month. Every year, the festival is being held to commemorate the birth anniversary of youth icon Swami Vivekananda. Crucial components of the National Youth Festival are the competitive events which include competitive and non-competitive cultural events, martial arts, exhibitions, intellectual discourses, young artists camps, seminars and adventure programmes. The presentation of National Youth Awards also takes place during this festival.

Jigmet Dolma from India secured fourth position in the Dhaka Marathon 2021. Jigmet Dolma is an SPO of Ladakh police. The marathon was organized to commemorate the return of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from Pakistan jail to Bangladesh in 1972. Bahadur Singh of India became the champion in the men’s category and Pushpa Bhandari of Nepal became the champion in the women’s category. Hicham Lakohi of Morocco came first in the elite competition of the marathon in men’s category while Angela Jim Asunde from Kenya won the women’s category in the same event.
