National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August
National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August every year to honour the birthday of Dhyan Chand a field hockey player. National Sports Day is also known as Rashtriya Khel Divas.

Telugu Language Day is observed on 29 August
Telugu Language Day is observed on 29 August each year in the State of Andhra Pradesh of the Republic of India. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Telugu poet Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy.

Centre to develop three Bamboo Clusters in Jammu, Katra and Samba areas of J&K
Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr Jitendra Singh has said that three Bamboo Clusters will be developed in Jammu, Katra and Samba areas for making of Bamboo basketry, Agarbatti and Bamboo Charcol. He said it will provide direct employment to nearly 25 thousand people.

CM Yediyurappa to flag off first RORO train from Bengaluru to Solapur
The maiden ‘Roll On Roll Off’ (RORO) train between Bengaluru and Solapur in Maharashtra consisting of open flat wagon on which trucks with goods are loaded will start from 30 August. The train will take 17 hours to reach its final destination which is at a distance of about 682 kms. The train will run via Dharmavaram, Guntakal, Raichur and Wadi to reach Bale near Solapur in Maharashtra.

Government launches contest “Chunauti” to promote startups in small towns
Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has launched “Chunauti”- Next Generation Startup Challenge Contest to further boost startups and software products with special focus on Tier-II towns of the country. The government has earmarked a budget of over 95 crore rupees over a period of three years for this programme. It aims at identifying around three hundred startups working in identified areas and providing them seed funds of upto 25 lakh rupees and other facilities.

India, Singapore sign Implementing Arrangement on Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief
India and Singapore today signed Implementing Arrangement on Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief. The two countries held a Defence Policy Dialogue via video conferencing today. It was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar and Permanent Secretary (Defence), Singapore Mr Chan Heng Kee.

Mr Shinzo Abe resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Japan
Japanese PM Shinzo Abe has announced his resignation for health reasons. The 65-year-old has suffered for many years from ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, but he said his condition had worsened recently. Last year, he became Japan’s longest serving prime minister. His current period in office began in 2012. He will remain in his post until a successor is chosen.

Bengaluru-based edu-tech firm ‘Unacademy’ has been roped in the as official partner for the Indian Premier League for three seasons. With this partnership, we will double-down on our efforts to make Unacademy the biggest brand in the consumer-internet space, said the company. The BCCI had earlier announced fantasy gaming platform Dream11 as this year’s IPL title sponsor.

Sports Minister announces massive hike in prize money of National Sports Awards
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju officially announced a massive hike in the prize money in four of the seven categories of the National Sports and Adventure Awards, which were given away in a virtual ceremony this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The prize money for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been increased to a whopping ₹25 lakh from the previous amount of ₹7.5 lakh, while Arjuna Award has been enhanced to ₹15 lakh from ₹5 lakh. The Dhronacharya (Lifetime) awardees, who were earlier given ₹5 lakh, will now be richer by ₹15 lakh, while Dhronacharya (Regular) winners will be given ₹10 lakh instead of ₹5 lakh. The prize money of Dhyan Chand Award has been increased to ₹10 lakh from ₹5 lakh. The hike will come into effect from this year.

Congress MP Harikrishnan Vasanthakumar passed away
In Tamil Nadu, Congress MP H. Vasantha Kumar representing Kanyakumari Lok Sabha Constituency passed away in Chennai, due to COVID-19. He was 70.

Veteran Athletics coach Purshottam Rai passed away
Veteran athletics coach Purshottam Rai died due to a cardiac arrest in Bengaluru. He was to be conferred the prestigious Dronacharya Award in the lifetime category. He was 79. Rai coached top athletes such as Olympian quartermiler Vandana Rao, heptathlete Pramila Aiyappa, Ashwini Nachappa, Murali Kuttan, MK Asha, EB Shyla, Rosa Kutty and GG Pramila.

Lok Sabha member H. Vasantha Kumar passed away
Lok Sabha member H.Vasantha Kumar passed away in Chennai. He was 70. He was representing the Kanyakumari constituency where he won on the Congress ticket in the last General Election.

Nelson Mandela’s personal Indian-origin physician Vejay Ramlakan passed away
Nelson Mandela’s personal Indian-origin physician Vejay Ramlakan, who served him for a decade until the South African leader’s death in 2013, passed away here following a cardiac arrest. He was 62.
