Centre decides to form committee to protect language, culture & land of Ladakh
Centre has decided to form a committee to protect the language, culture and land of Ladakh and ensuring citizen’s participation in the Union Territory’s development. The Committee will be headed by the Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy and will include elected representatives from Ladakh, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, central government, and the Ladakh administration.

Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil for Agriculture signs MoU with Sikkim State Organic Certification Agency
In Ladakh, Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil for Agriculture Mohammad Ali Chandan signed a Memorandum of Understanding for organic farming and its certification with Sikkim State Organic Certification Agency. The MOU was signed during a meeting organized by the Mission Director, Union Territory of Ladakh for interaction, deliberation and confirmation of the Agriculture Sector in Kargil under Organic Certification.

Samagra Shiksha in partnership with HUL distributes 1.5 lakh soaps to different schools of J&K
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Samagra Shiksha in partnership with Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), has distributed 1.5 lakh soaps to different schools of the Union Territory to support the government’s response to COVID-19.

J&K LG, Manoj Sinha launches Mobile Application ‘Satark Nagrik’ and Departmental Vigilance Officers Portal
In Jammu and Kashmir, LG, Manoj Sinha launched Mobile Application ‘Satark Nagrik’ and Departmental Vigilance Officers Portal of J&K Anti Corruption Bureau at Civil Secretariat, Jammu. Speaking on the occasion, the LG observed that UT Government is taking comprehensive measures for ensuring transparent, accountable and responsive governance. The mobile application launched today has been developed with a purpose to facilitate seamless flow of information about corruption and enable citizens to submit their grievances with ease and mobility.

Week long Fit India Movement commences in Kargil
In Kargil, the Week Long Fit India Movement commenced from the Government Middle School Latoo on the LOC with 60 players participating in Snow Football Match. Fit India Movement is a nation-wide campaign that aims at encouraging people to include physical activities and sports in their everyday lives.

Telangana becomes 3rd State in country to successfully undertake Dept. of Expenditure stipulated ULB reform
Telangana has become the 3rd State in the country to successfully undertake Urban Local Bodies, ULB reform stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance. The State has become eligible to mobilise additional financial resources of Rs 2,508 crore through Open Market Borrowings. Permission for the same was issued by the Department of Expenditure. Telangana has now joined the two other States Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, who have completed this reform.

Industrial development scheme worth ₹24,800 cr launched in J&K
The National Democratic Alliance government has approved an incentive package worth 284 billion rupees ($3.8 billion) to boost industry and create jobs in the newly created union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The scheme aims to attract new investments into the region, which has slow industrial growth and lack of employment. Existing industries in Jammu and Kashmir have been provided working capital support at the rate of 5% for 5 years.

CBIC introduces liberalised Authorised Economic Operator package for MSMEs
Recognising the critical contribution of MSMEs in supporting the economy especially during the present difficult times of COVID-19 pandemic, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, CBIC has taken a new initiative to introduce its flagship Liberalised MSME AEO Package. In order to attract MSMEs to become Authorised Economic Operators, AEOs and avail the various benefits, the CBIC has relaxed the compliance criteria provided the MSMEs have a valid certificate from their line-Ministry.

Eligibility criteria of scoring minimum 75 per cent in Class 12th relaxed for admission in IITs this year
Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank today announced that eligibility criteria of scoring minimum 75 per cent in Class 12th has been relaxed for taking admission in IITs this year. He informed that JEE (Advanced) – 2021 will be held as a computer based test on 3rd July this year. This year JEE (Advanced) will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur.

Standing Committee of National Board of Wildlife approves advisory for Human-Wildlife Conflict management
The Standing Committee of National Board of Wildlife has approved the advisory for management of Human-Wildlife Conflict in the country. The advisory makes important preions for the States and Union Territories for dealing with Human-Wildlife conflict situations and seeks expedited inter-departmental coordinated and effective actions. The advisory envisages empowering gram panchayats in dealing with the problematic wild animals as per the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

IAF signs MoU with IDSR for officers to undertake doctoral research
Indian Air Force and Institute of Defence Studies and Research – IDSR- an autonomous Institution of Gujarat University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This will enable the Officers of IAF to undertake Doctoral Research, Post-Graduate Programme and Post Graduate Diploma. These courses will cover various areas of interest that include Defence studies, Defence Management, National Security, Aerospace & Aviation Science and other areas of Defence Technology.

Minister of State for Defence Shripad Yesso Naik today handed over One Hundred thousandth Bullet Proof Jacket to Army Chief General M M Naravane in a ceremony held in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Naik said, the Government has honoured its commitment of protecting the precious lives of our soldiers fighting the enemy. He said, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi places high emphasis on the operational safety of the soldiers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a video-teleconference with his German counterpart Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel. US Congress certifies Joe Biden as the next President and Kamala Harris as Vice President
The US Congress has certified Joe Biden as the next President and Kamala Harris as Vice President of the country. Vice-President Mike Pence, who as president of the Senate oversaw the certification process, confirmed to Congress that, of the 538 electoral college votes cast, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris received 306 and Donald Trump and Mike Pence received 232 – mirroring the results of November’s election.

SBI, IOCL launch contactless RuPay debit card
State Bank of India (SBI) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) announced the launch of co-branded contactless Rupay debit card. Co-branded by SBI and IOCL, transactions up to ₹5,000 can be paid for through the contactless card. The initiative will promote digital payments, and is in alignment with the government’s vision of a Digital India, chairman of IndianOil said.

IDFC First Bank hikes interest rate on savings balances below 1 lakh to 7%
From 1 January, IDFC First Bank has increased the interest rate on savings account balances up to ₹1 lakh to 7%. The interest rate was 6% earlier. The rate compares favorably with the 3-4% on offer in major private sector banks.

Elon Musk surpasses Jeff Bezos to become world’s richest person
Tesla Inc chief and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk surpassed Amazon.com Inc’s top boss Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest person, Bloomberg News reported. Including Thursday’s gains in Tesla shares, Musk had a net worth of more than $188.5 billion, $1.5 billion more than Bezos, according to Bloomberg News report.

India’s GDP may contract by 7.7% in FY21, says govt in first advance estimates
The growth in India’s real GDP during 2020-21 is estimated at -7.7% as compared to the growth rate of 4.2% in 2019-20, said government as part of its first advance estimates of the economic growth. The growth in nominal GDP during 2020-21 is estimated at -4.2%, says CSO. As per the first advanced estimates of the national income released by the NSO, there was contraction in almost all sectors with the exception of agriculture.

PUBG Mobile highest revenue generating game in India in 2020
Despite being banned mid-year by union government, PUBG Mobile was the highest revenue generating gaming app in India in terms of user spending in 2020 across Google Play Store and Apple App Store, according to Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm. PUBG Mobile was also the highest revenue generating gaming app globally in 2020. Activision’s Call of Duty Mobile, which also profited from the ban and raked 1.4 million downloads in the week after it, was the 5th highest revenue generating game in India in 2020.

SAP to invest ₹500 crore to accelerate multi-cloud strategy in India
German technology major SAP SE said it would invest ₹500 crore in India to localize and offer customers the flexibility of a multi-cloud environment. SAP will make available its multiple cloud solutions in India data centres. In May, SAP launched its Commerce Cloud and S/4 HANA Cloud on its India data centre to help domestic enterprises meet end-to-end customer demands, make commerce frictionless while ensuring compliance with the data protection bill.

Justice Hima Kohli becomes first woman Chief Justice of Telangana HC
Justice Hima Kohli has become the first woman Chief Justice of Telangana High Court following her swearing-in. Telangana Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has administered oath to her at a special ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, several judges of the State High Court, Union Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy, several Ministers from Telangana and leaders of various political parties were among those present on this occasion.

NIT Trichy graduate Dr Raj Iyer becomes US Army’s first Chief Information Officer
Dr Raj Iyer, has taken over as the first Chief Information Officer of the US Army. Equivalent in rank to a three-star General, Iyer will supervise an annual budget of $16 billion for the US Army’s IT operation. Over 15,000 civilians and military personnel posted across 100 countries work under him.

Khelo India Ice Hockey tournament begins in Chiktan, Kargil
Khelo India Ice Hockey Tournament is being organised at Chiktan by Zonal Physical Education Officer Chiktan. For the first time the women team of Chiktan also participated in the Khelo India Games in Kargil district. There are 13 teams from different villages of Chiktan participating in the tournament, which include 11 men’s teams and 2 women’s teams.

Satya Paul, designer who created the ‘contemporary’ sari passed away
Fashion designer Satya Paul, founder of the iconic eponymous clothing brand, died in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu on 7 January. He was 79. Satya Paul, founder of the iconic eponymous clothing brand, crated sari in bold patterns and colours that broke away from the traditional aesthetic.
