61st Raising day of Border Roads Organisation is celebrated on May 7
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated its 61st Raising Day on 07 May 2021. The BRO was formed on 7 May 1960 BRO develops and maintains road networks in India’s border areas and friendly neighboring countries. It is a part of the Indian Armed Forces, and operates under the Ministry of Defence since 2015. Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry is the incumbent Director General of Border Roads (DGBR).

CBSE launches new mobile application for psycho social wellness of students, parents
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has launched a new mobile application for psycho social wellness of students and parents. The new app namely CBSE Dost for Life has been designed for students of classes 9 to 12 and it can be used for counselling sessions from 10th of this month.

Ayush Ministry launches nationwide campaign to distribute AYUSH 64 & Kabasura Kudineer
In a concerted response to the second surge of COVID-19 infection in the country, the Ministry of Ayush is launching a massive nationwide campaign to distribute its proven poly herbal Ayurvedic drugs AYUSH 64 and Sidha drug Kabasura Kudineer. The efficacy of these drugs has been proved through robust multi-centre clinical trials. The multi stakeholder campaign being launched by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju will ensure that medicines reach the needy in a transparent and efficient manner. The main collaborator in the campaign is Sewa Bharati.

PM Modi participates in meeting of European Council
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is participating in the ongoing meeting of the European Council through virtual medium. The India-EU Leaders’ Meeting is being hosted by Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa. Portugal currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Heads of State of all the 27 European Union countries are also participating in this meet. The EU27 have met in this format only once before, with the US President in March this year.

Government of India and European Investment Bank (EIB) sign finance contract for second tranche of 150 mn Euro for Pune Metro Rail
The Government of India and European Investment Bank (EIB) signed the finance contract for second tranche of 150 million Euro for Pune Metro Rail project through a virtual signing ceremony. Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, K. Rajaraman signed the loan on behalf of Government of India and Mr. Christian Kettel Thomsen, Vice-President, signed the loan on behalf of EIB. The financing from EIB will help to fund construction and operation of Corridor 1- Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Swargate and Corridor 2 -Vanaz to Ramvadi, totaling about 31.25 kilometer and purchase of a related fleet of metro cars.

Oil and Gas PSUs inks MoU for Construction and Redevelopment of Shri Badrinath Dham as a Spiritual Smart Hill Town
The top Oil and Gas PSUs of India, including IndianOil, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC and GAIL, have inked a Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the Shri Badrinath Utthan Charitable Trust for Construction and Redevelopment of Shri Badrinath Dham in Uttarakhand as a Spiritual Smart hill Town. Under the MoUs, these PSUs will contribute Rs. 99.60 crore in the first phase of project. The Phase I will include developmental activities such as river embankment work, building all-terrain vehicular path, building bridges, beautifying existing bridges, establishing gurukul facilities with accommodation, creating toilet and drinking water facilities, installing streetlights, mural paintings etc.

Mr. N. Rangasamy sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry . He is the 20th Chief Minister of the Union Territory.

MK Stalin sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
MK Stalin sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The state Governor Banwarilal Purohit administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Stalin and his 33 other cabinet colleagues at a function held at the Raj Bhavan lawns in Chennai.

World’s Largest Aircraft, ’Stratoluanch Roc’ Successfully Completes Second Test Flight
The world’s largest plane ‘Stratoluanch Roc’ successfully completed test flight for a second time recently over the Southern California desert. The test flight lasted for about three hours and 14 minutes and the vehicle reached an altitude of 14,000-feet (about 2.6 miles) at a top speed of 199 mph.

World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge Arouca 516, Unveiled in Portugal
Arouca Bridge 516, the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge and was officially inaugurated on 02 May 2021 in northern Portugal. The steel and concrete suspension bridge is a 1,693 ft (516 m) long and 175 m (574 ft) above the Paiva River. It is a hanging metal walkway bridge, which is supported by two v-shaped concrete towers and suspended from cables.

OBITUARY

Mahatma Gandhi’s Former Personal Secretary V Kalyanam passes away
Indian freedom fighter, V Kalyanam, who was the former personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi, has passed away. He was 99. Kalyanam was last surviving personal secretary of Gandhiji, who served from 1943 to 1948, when the Mahatma was assassinated. He joined the freedom struggle in 1942 during Quit India Movement. Kalyanam joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014.

Veteran Music Composer Vanraj Bhatia passes away
Veteran music composer Vanraj Bhatia passed away. The 93-year-old Padma Shri awardee, who scored the music for Shyam Benegal classics like ‘Ankur’ and ‘Bhumika’ and TV series ‘Yatra’ and ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ lived alone at his apartment at the Napean Sea Road in Mumbai. After graduating from the Elphinstone College in Mumbai, he trained in western classical music in London and Paris.

Veteran Urdu Critic, Professor Shamim Hanfi passes away
Veteran Urdu Critic, writer and poet, Professor Shamim Hanfi passed away. He was 82. Professor Hanafi was associated with Jamia Millia Islamia as Professor Emeritus. A proponent of the modernist movement in Urdu literature, Professor Hanafi authored several books on literary criticism, plays and books for children. He also translated Abul Kalam Azad’s book ‘India Wins Freedom’.
