World Liver Day is observed on April 19
The World Liver Day is observed on 19 April annually to spread awareness about causes of liver disease and tips for its prevention so as to take holistic care of liver. The liver is the second largest and the second most complex organ in the body, after the brain.

World Creativity and Innovation Day is observed on April 21
The World Creativity and Innovation Day (#WCID) is celebrated on April 21 every year to raise awareness about the importance of creativity and innovation in problem solving and encourage creative multidisciplinary thinking at the individual and group levels. The United Nations recognised the day in April 2017. The first UN World Creativity and Innovation Day was celebrated on April 21, 2018.

National Civil Services Day is observed on April 21
In India, the ‘Civil Services Day’ is celebrated on April 21 every year as a thanks giving day to all the Civil Servants for their service to the society and also for Civil Servants to ‘rededicate themselves to the cause of citizen and renew their commitments to public service’. The day April 21 has been chosen to commemorate the day when the first Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel addressed the probationers of Administrative Services Officers in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi. In his address, he called Civil Servants, the ‘Steel Frame of India’.

International Mother Earth Day is observed on April 22
International Mother Earth Day (Earth Day) is celebrated every year on 22 April to recognise that the Earth and its ecosystems are our home and that it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth. The day was established in 2009 by the United Nations General Assembly. The theme of 2021 International Mother Earth Day is Restore Our Earth.

Italy launches first-ever mega food park & food processing unit in Gujarat
Italy has launched its first ever mega food park project in India, comprising of food processing facilities, in a bid to further strengthen ties between the two nations. The pilot project named “The Mega Food Park” was virtually launched at Fanidhar Mega Food Park, in Gujarat.

Priyanka Mohite Becomes First Indian Woman To Scale Mt Annapurna
Priyanka Mohite has became the first Indian woman to scale Mt Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain in the world. Mt Annapurna is a massif in the Himalayas in north-central Nepal situated 8,091 metres (26,545 ft) above sea level. Apart from this Priyanka has previously climbed Mt Everest in 2013 and Mt Lhotse in 2018.

Cabinet approves MoU between CCI and CADE
Cabinet approved the MoU between Competition Commission of India (CCI) and Administrative Council for Economic Defense of Brazil, (CADE). Section 18 of the Competition Act, 2002 permits CCI to enter into any Memorandum or arrangement with any agency of any foreign country for the purpose of discharging its duties or performing its functions under the Act. CCI has entered into the MoUs with the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice of USA, Director General Competition of European Union, Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Competition Bureau of Canada and BRICS Competition Authorities.

Cabinet approves fresh MoU between ICAI and CA ANZ
The Cabinet approved a fresh Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, (CA ANZ). The engagement between the two Institutes is expected to result in greater employment opportunities for Indian Chartered Accountants and also greater remittances back to India. The MoU provides for mutual recognition of qualification of members of other bodies, who have achieved membership by completing the Examination, professional program and practical experience membership requirements of the two parties.

Myanmar Army Chief to attend ASEAN meeting in Jakarta
The Head of the Military government of Myanmar Senior General Min Aung Hlaing will embark on his first foreign visit after the coup to Indonesia to participate in the ASEAN leaders meeting.

RBI constitutes six-member panel headed by former ED Sudarshan Sen to review ARCs
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constituted a six-member panel to carry out comprehensive review of the working of Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs) in the financial sector ecosystem. The panel will be headed by former Executive Director of RBI, Sudarshan Sen.
Other members of the panel include:

  • Vishakha Mulye – Executive Director, ICICI Bank;
  • P N Prasad – former Dy. Managing Director, SBI;
  • Rohit Prasad – Professor of Economics, MDI, Gurgaon;
  • Abizer Diwanji – Partner, Ernst & Young;
  • R Anand – Chartered Accountant

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

CAG GC Murmu chosen as external auditor by OPCW
India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) GC Murmu has been chosen as the external auditor by a prestigious intergovernmental organisation working for the elimination of chemical weapons. The Hague-based Conference of State Parties of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) selected the CAG as its external auditor for a three-year term starting 2021. India was also selected as a member of the Executive Council of the OPCW representing Asia Group for another two-year term during the OPCW Conference of State Parties.

RBI approves re-appointment of Murali Natrajan as MD and CEO of DCB Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the re-appointment of Murali M. Natrajan as the Managing Director & CEO of private sector lender, DCB Bank, for further period of one year. The re-appointment of Mr. Natrajan is subject to the approval of shareholders, and will begin from April 29, 2021. Natrajan was first appointed as MD and CEO of DCB Bank in May, 2009.

India Ranks 142 in World Press Freedom Index 2021; Norway Tops
India has been placed at 142nd position among 180 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index 2021. The index is published every year by the international journalism not-for profit body, “Reporters Without Borders (RSF)”, to evaluate the press freedom situation in 180 countries and territories. Norway has retained its top spot for the fifth year running, followed by Finland and Denmark at second and third place respectively. Eritrea is at the bottom of the index at 180th place.

OBITUARY

Noted Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan passes away
Noted Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan has passed away. He was 96. He was recipient of Padma Vibhushan, Maulana Wahiduddin made significant contributions to peace, harmony and reforms in the society.

Eminent Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh passes away
Noted Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh has passed away following COVID-19 complications. He was 89. Ghosh was known by his pen name Kuntak. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 2011, the Jnanpith Award in 2016, and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1977 for his book ‘Babarer Prarthana‘, as well as Saraswati Samman and Rabindra Puraskar among other awards.

Former RBI Governor Maidavolu Narasimham passes away
The former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Maidavolu Narasimham, has passed away. He was 94. He was famously known as the “Father of Indian Banking Reforms”. Narasimham was the 13th Governor of RBI and served from May 2, 1977 to November 30, 1977.

Adobe co-founder and PDF developer Charles Geschke passes away
American computer scientist Charles Geschke, best known as the co-founder of graphics and publishing software company Adobe Inc, has passed away. He was 81. Geschke co-founded Adobe company in 1982 with fellow mate John Warnock. Geschke, who was widely known as Chuck, also helped in developing the popular Portable Document Format (PDF).

Former US Vice President Walter Mondale Passes Away
Former American politician, diplomat, and lawyer Walter Mondale, who served as the 42nd Vice President of the United States, has passed away. He was 93. Mondale served as Vice President from 1977 to 1981 under President Jimmy Carter.

Well-Known Kannada, Writer, Lexicographer, G Venkatasubbaiah, passes away
Veteran Kannada writer Ganjam Venkatasubbiah, who also was a grammarian, editor, lexicographer and literary critic, has passed away. He was 107. G. Venkatasubbaiah was commonly known as a walking encyclopedia of Kannada language and culture, in his literary circles. He received the Padma Shri in 2017 for his proficiency in Kannada literature, poetry, essays and translations.

National Award-winning filmmaker Sumitra Bhave passes away
Acclaimed Marathi filmmaker Sumitra Bhave has passed away suffering from age-related issues. She was 78. Sumitra Bhave was popular as duo with filmmaker Sunil Sukthankar in Marathi cinema and Marathi theatre. Bhave was known for her out-of-the-box content and also for the way she handled social issues in her films.
